Meniscectomy
The knee is one of the most important joints in the body. It is also one of the most commonly injured joints, particularly in athletes and active individuals. One of the most frequent knee injuries involves the meniscus—an essential piece of cartilage that cushions and stabilizes the knee. When the meniscus is torn and causing pain, a surgical procedure called a partial meniscectomy may be recommended.
What is a meniscectomy?
A meniscectomy is a commonly performed orthopedic procedure done to alleviate knee pain. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat a degenerated or traumatic meniscus tear. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. The procedure involves the arthroscopic removal of the damaged portion of the meniscus.
The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia). It plays a crucial role in knee stability and function. However, when it is torn due to injury, degeneration, or excessive wear and tear, it can cause pain, swelling, and limited mobility.
When is a meniscectomy recommended?
Not all meniscus tears require surgery. Some small or stable tears may become asymptomatic on their own with rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. However, a partial meniscectomy may be necessary if:
- The tear is large, unstable, or located in an area with poor blood supply, making healing unlikely.
- You are experiencing persistent pain, swelling, and restricted knee function despite nonsurgical treatments.
- The torn meniscus is causing mechanical symptoms such as locking, catching, or giving way of the knee.
Of course, you may be a candidate for a meniscus repair as well. Dr. Patel favors meniscus preservation if possible and thus for most young patients, meniscus repair is performed over partial meniscectomy.
Dr. Ronak M. Patel carefully evaluates each patient to determine whether surgery is the best option. His expertise in sports medicine ensures that every treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s lifestyle and activity level.
The Meniscectomy Procedure
A meniscectomy is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using arthroscopic surgery, which means small incisions are made around the knee, and a tiny camera (arthroscope) is inserted to guide the surgery. This technique allows for a quicker recovery and minimal scarring compared to open surgery.
Dr. Patel will make small incisions (usually about 1/4 inch) around the knee. An arthroscope is inserted to provide a clear view inside the joint. Using small surgical instruments, the damaged portion of the meniscus is carefully trimmed away, while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The incisions are closed with stitches or surgical tape, and a bandage is applied. Patients are typically able to go home the same day.
Recovery After Meniscectomy
Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the procedure, the patient’s overall health, and adherence to post-operative rehabilitation. Most patients experience relief from pain relatively quickly, but full recovery can take a few weeks to a few months.
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy
Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in ensuring the knee regains its full strength and function after surgery. Dr. Ronak M. Patel and his team at Hinsdale Orthopedics provide personalized rehabilitation plans to help patients recover safely and efficiently.
To prolong knee health after surgery, patients should:
- Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on the knee joint.
- Engage in low-impact exercises like swimming or cycling.
- Follow their prescribed rehabilitation plan closely.
- Avoid activities that put excessive strain on the knee.
